Synopsis:

Robert Hague is a sculptor who brings an impecable skill set to a contemporary sensibility. His Trojan series, in which hammers are recast as bombers, balloons, birds and other unexpected objects , shows his deftness with material and subject matter – the hammer, a sculptor’s tool, pushes forwarded into new territories, much like the sculptor himself. Throughout his work, Hague revels in ambiguity, conveying simultaneously elements of the heavy and light, the fixed and fluid, the brutal and gentle, the abstract and figurative and the stern and amusing. More recently, Hague has embarked on a complex series of lithographic print works.

Robert Hague’s recent solo exhibitions include Monument (Substation Arts Centre, Melbourne 2012), 200% (The Arthouse, Christchurch 2011) and Twelve (Axia Modern Art, Melbourne 2010). His recent group exhibitions include Art on Paper (Hazelhurst Regional Gallery, New South Wales 2013), On a Wing and a Prayer (Mars Gallery, Port Melbourne 2013), Sculpture by the Sea (Cottesloe Beach, Western Australia 2013) and the McClelland Sculpture Fair. In 2013, Hague was the subject of a ten-year retrospective survey at Deakin University Gallery titled Deca: 2003-2013.

He is regularly commissioned for private and public sculptures locally and internationally and has been awarded a number of prizes, including the Lorne Sculpture Indoor Sculpture Award (2011), the Deakin University Small Sculpture Award (2010) and the Director’s Prize at Sculpture by the Sea (1999). Hague’s work is held in collections throughout Australia and abroad.
